New Here? Well take a look at the Free iPod Guide with step-by-step instructions first.
Last time I talked about how to get referrals from people without usage of the internet. I promised this week I would talk about the internet, and I will. I would first like to state an idea that worked really well for me, it got me 4 referrals alone.
Favors
Someone owes you money for that drink or meal or movie ticket you picked up for them but they've been really lax about paying you back, well convince them to take a trial to netflix or gamefly or blockbuster instead of paying you back. If the debt is around 10 dollars it's cheaper for them, and they are more likely to pay back the money in a way that directly benefits them with movies or games. This is especially useful for people who you think were not going to pay you back anyways.
Someone wants to get a ride to the concert and he needs to chip in for gas but forgot his wallet? Do this!
Heading them off
First step: Memorize some of the more common offers. Second step: Wait for someone to mention the services. Now I know this does not seems like a very effective tactic. It will not come about very often, but if someone was ALREADY about to use one of the offers, it is an almost guaranteed way to get a referral without any blood sweat or tears. Bidz.com is a good candidate this time of year since it sells jewelry with the holiday seasons approaching. Just convince them to click your link before going about your business, it costs them nothing more.
The Internet (Part 1)
The internet holds many possibilities for getting referrals so I will have to cover it one part at a time. Know that the internet is risky and does not guarentee results in the slightest, before you start resorting to it (and especially before you start paying for it) exhaust all of your local options.
WARNING: If anything you do is considered spamming, scamming, or otherwise violating the terms of service then you will be immediately cut off. Game over. If you think it might be a violation just don't do it.
So lets start with some simple ideas anyone can do:
Email
Emailing people you know is a great start (or IMing if you choose to). Make sure it's someone you know. Asking for help or asking to cut them in on the deal is more likely to get a response than just posting a very "ad" like email. This is very similar to a lot of the local tactics, only using the internet as a medium instead of face-to-face.
Message Boards
Ok now we are starting to get a little tricky. It's getting easier and easier to fall into the spam category with this. Do not post anyplace where doing so is unwelcome. Be prepared to have your credibility hurt in most cases. Also starting an account only to post links is highly looked down upon and will probably be considered spam.
Chatrooms
Once again much like message boards though in this case you can hold a conversation with someone and try to "pitch" the ipod site.
Advertisements
There are many services that allow you to advertise your website on the internet (take google adwords for one) also many websites allow direct third party advertisements (like webcomics). While this is almost guaranteed to get people to go to your link, be sure the terms of service allows for direct linking like that. Perhaps you'd have to link to a blog which mentions the link.
The problems with this are the fees. You are almost guaranteed to get people to the site but not to sign up. If it takes 1/1000 people who click to sign up and it costs 5 cents per click, then you pay 50 dollars per sign up. Try all free options first. I have never tried this.
Blogs
So lets assume you have a blog or website that already gets a decent number of hits, perhaps people even respect you and come back for more. This would be a good place to mention that you need help getting an iPod. Let them know the truth of the matter and be humble. It just might work. Note: posts along the lines of "Hey dudes you got to try this, it really works. www.blahblahblah.com/ref=blahblahblah" it makes you look like you were payed off and can hurt your credibility. Also post it once, maybe once every 30 posts but no more. No sense clogging your decent blog with ads.
Ok that does it for this update. More on the internet later. Remember, if I've helped you out with this then please return the favor.
